Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and increased health problems. In Ayurveda it is considered as Sthoulya, where the impairment of Kapha Dosha and Medo Dhatu( Fat tissue ) are the mainly involved in pathogenesis.
Obesity is of various types as Insidious,, Gradual, Rapid weight gain, OR Mild, Moderate, Severe where Ayurveda enumerates as Stoola and Ati stoola . OR Adhika, Stoola, Madhya stoola and Hina stoola for better management through the panchakarm or other upakramas.
Physiological- during Pregnancy, and during puberty. Other causes are – over eating ( heavy food, oily food, carbohydrate rich food like sweets, chocolates, ice-creams, junk food, canned food, carbonated water, etc) , sedentary lifestyle ( desk work jobs etc ) or lack of physical activities, day sleeping, Diseases like Cushing syndrome, Hypothyroidism. Certain tumors, long term medications like antidepressants, oral contraceptive pills, corticosteroids etc , Stress, Hereditary
Breathlessness, increased sweating, easily gets tired, back & joint pains, snoring, unable to do abrupt physical activities,
High triglycerides ,Diabetes,High blood pressure,Heart disease,Stroke,certain Cancers (like cancer of the uterus, cervix, endometrium, ovaries, breast, colon, rectum, esophagus, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidney and prostate),Breathing disorders (including sleep apnea),Gallbladder disease,Gynecological problems, such as infertility and irregular periods,Erectile dysfunction and sexual health issues,Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease,Osteoarthritis. The line of treatment in Ayurveda is to expel the impaired accumulated Kapha dosha & gradually bring back the medo dhathu to its normalcy. This is attained through modified wholesome dietary advise, conducive lifestyle changes, and detoxification through panchakarma and other therapies which pacify kapha and medo dhathus like Udvartana, lekhana basti, oral medications or formulations etc
