Cirrhosis of the Liver or Liver disease is a slowly progressing disease in which healthy liver tissue is replaced with scar tissue, eventually preventing the liver from functioning properly. Not to forget, liver performs more than 500 functions in the human body. The scar tissue blocks the flow of blood through the liver and slows the processing of nutrients, hormones, drugs, and naturally produced toxins. It also slows the production of proteins and other substances made by the liver. Hepatitis B and C, fatty liver, and alcohol abuse are the most common causes of cirrhosis of the liver. Fatty liver associated with Diabetes and obesity may also be one of the causes of liver cirrhosis. Prolonged use of medications including prescription and over-the-counter drugs like acetaminophen, some antibiotics, and some antidepressants, can also lead to cirrhosis. Cirrhosis can cause weakness, loss of appetite, easy bruising, yellowing of the skin (jaundice), itching, and fatigue. Complications of cirrhosis include oedema and ascites, bruising and bleeding, oesophageal varices, splenomegaly, jaundice, gall stones, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, liver cancer, risk of infections, kidney and liver damage etc. Liver cirrhosis according to Ayurveda is considered as the extreme aggravation of Pitta dosha in the liver.
