Allergies

Allergy forms when the body starts producing antibodies to fend off allergens that are swallowed, injected, or inhaled, or that touch the skin or the eyes provoking discomfort and irritation in the body. In simple words allergies are “a number of conditions caused by hypersensitivity of the immune system to something in the environment that usually causes little problem in most people.”

The response may be of localized and latter case can sometimes prove fatal in the absence of treatment. Allergies are of two types- 1. Genetic predisposition 2. Seasonal & Acquired allergies.

Common allergens include Dust and pollen , trees , latex or grass, weeds, Insect bites ,pets like dog, cat, in our environment. Some metals, and foods like peanuts, walnuts, milk & milk products , soya, eggs, wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish. Medications like asprin, pencilline, and some antibiotics.

Signs & Symptoms
Affected organ Symptom
Respiratory system Running nose ,sneezing, wheezing, coughing, choking, runny nose, sneezing, tearing, and itching.
Skin Rashes, such as eczema and hives (urticaria)
Eyes Redness and itching of the conjunctiva (allergic conjunctivitis, watery.
Gastrointestinal tract Abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting, diarrhea
Ayurvedic approach

According to Ayurveda, an allergy is the result of a particular substance (the allergen) aggravating a specific dosha: vata, pitta, or kapha. Ayurveda therefore classifies allergies according to dosha, depending on which one(s) are triggered in each individual case.

More often than not, allergic reactions are reflective of our constitutions ( genetic predisposition ).

The main cause of seasonal and acquired sensitivities is a reactive type of toxin called Amavisha. Ama is created by incomplete digestion, due to eating food that is unsuitable for your body type ( apathyaya aahara) or is too heavy to digest, and gets lodged in the colon and digestive tract eventually travel to different organs or tissues in the body and lodge there,it develops into the reactive toxin called Amavisha.

Allergens add on with Ama and depending upon the dosha and the tissues involved, and a reaction is created . Hence de- toxification is main treatment done in panchakarma . The root cause of the disease has to be expelled out of the body in order to reduce its re-occurrence, which is best done in panchakarma procedures.

Treatments

Ayurveda aims at prevention of allergies through panchakarma therapies and enhances body’s immunity through oral medications and its unique Rasayana formulations.

  • Panchakarma treatments like Vamana,Virechana & Nasya
  • Shamana chikitsa :oral medications for mild allergies
  • Rasayana therapy: immunity enhancing treatments & medications
