Psoriasis is a distressing illness that has a significant effect on the quality of life of a person. This condition responds excellently to Ayurveda treatments like Shodhana (cleansing/detoxification).
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune skin disease. Though it can affect anyone, it mostly occurs in adults, particularly with family history of psoriasis and occurs due to environmental and immunological factors. It occurs as reddish patches on the skin associated with itching, can present on any part of the body but typically occurs on the knees, elbows, and scalp, and it can also affect the torso, palms, and soles of the feet. Gradually, the lesions are covered by crusty, silvery scales. It is a cause of emotional distress for patients leading to decreased self-esteem and an increased incidence of mood disorders. Psoriasis gets better and worse spontaneously and can have periodic remissions (clear skin). Psoriasis may also be associated with psoriatic arthritis which leads to pain and swelling in the joints. Although the exact root cause /aetiology is not very clear, certain triggers that worsen symptoms include cold, dry weather, stress, some medications like beta-blockers, lithium; Infections, skin injury, alcohol and smoking.
According to Ayurveda, vitiation of vata and kapha dosha causes psoriasis. Unhealthy and erratic food habits, consumption of food in wrong combination like dairy products with fish or meat, too much intake of curd, black gram, seafood, sour or salty food stuffs can trigger psoriasis due to accumulation of toxins. Psoriasis is well treated by Panchakarma therapies, which are Ayurveda treatment methods for complete detoxification of the body. Many herbal and herbo-mineral medications, used both internally and topically have been found effective in the management of psoriasis. These treatments are coupled with dietary corrections, yoga, pranayama etc. to ensure optimal response.
