Pain, trouble or difficulty in passing the urine is called as Dysuria. It is a painful condition that can occur in both men and in women but more commonly seen in women. Some of the common reasons that may cause dysuria are urinary tract infections, stones in kidney, ureter or bladder, enlarged prostate, chronic diabetes and pregnancy. Dysuria is not a disease, it reflects an underlying medical condition and hence thorough history and evaluation is necessary.
This condition is referred to as Mutrakricchra in Ayurveda and an important cause for this condition is also withholding or suppressing the mutravega (natural urge to urinate). Therefore, a healthy habit of timely evacuation helps to keep our urinary system healthy. There are various treatments prescribed in Ayurveda for management of this condition including Abhyanga (massage) of the lower abdomen with lukewarm medicated oil and Avagaha sweda (sitz bath) with herbal decoction. It is important to note that treating the underlying medical condition provides relief from dysuria.
Personal genital hygiene and lifestyle modification (avoiding suppression of urination) can reduce the chances of dysuria. Drinking plenty of fluids (8-10 glasses per day), hot or boiled and cooled water is the best for removing infections and flush out the unwanted toxins from the body. Medicated water prepared with spices such as coriander and cumin seeds acts as a diuretic and helps to relieve dysuria. It may be beneficial to avoid katu (pungent, spicy), amla (sour) and lavana (salty) food that can enhance Pitta and Vata dosha. Intake of non-citrus fruits and vegetables also helps along with avoidance of smoking, alcohol and caffeine.
