Ayurvedic literature reveals about many modalities of healing , i.e. surgery and para surgical
techniques . Amongst the para surgical measures, Rakta mokshana or blood-letting enjoys a pride of place from the dawn of medical history. There are so many diseases, which are associated with pain. To mitigate the pain there are so many remedies but none are adequately useful. But our ancient surgeons were known to some modalities, which were found very effective in the management of pain of severe conditions. One of these modalities is jalauka, which is used externally and it is better than internal application. Acharya Sushruta had advocated carrying out Raktamokshana in Shushkarsha. Amongst the different methods of Raktamokshana. Jalaukavacharana being a simple procedure, painless and can be carried out easily. Hence, it has been selected for the present study.
